Sometimes life is all about just showing up. I had passed by the Ariam Cafe (ቤት ቁርሲ ኣርያም) on a previous exploration of the Danforth, and met the owner Habtom outside while taking pictures of the cafe's storefront - I loved the Ge'ez alphabet (fidäl, ፊደል) on the overhead sign. Promising to come back, I finally did one Friday evening. Walking in the door, Habtom introduced me to his family and the beautiful new café they have opened. Although I am not usually a fan of bread, the "Kicha Fitftit Butter" (ቅጫ ፍትፍት ብጠስሚ) - Homemade bread cooked with butter and berbere spice - piqued my interest on the menu. The menu, itself, boasted a well-rounded selection of Habesha (Eritrean, Ethiopian) delicacies - Tibsi, Fata, Ga'at, Shiro. And the prices cannot be beat - they are some of the best prices on the Danforth. With its deep orange colour, and fluffy, fried texture, the Kicha Fitftit Butter was a uniquely pleasing experience. The aroma was strong but not overpowering, the taste was buttery and not heavy, the texture crispy and soft, and the colour vibrant and joyful. The portion size was just right. But the best part of the evening was sitting down with Habtom and enjoying a traditional Jebena coffee and popcorn (and himbasha ሕምባሻ / ambasha አምባሻ bread) together. Carefully prepared by Habtom's wife, Habtom and I enjoyed the next hour or so talking about his life's migrations from Eritrea to various destinations in Africa, South America, the USA and finally to Canada. He has opened-up successful businesses in many countries under all sorts of conditions. The telling of his story could only be appreciated over the art form of sharing a traditional coffee ceremony together. I wish every success to the recently-opened Ariam Cafe (ቤት ቁርሲ ኣርያም) at 1242 Danforth Avenue. Amico, grazie ancora una volta, io sarò di ritorno al più presto possibile... (My friend, thank you once again, I will be back as soon as possible).

I have consistently had an enjoyable experience at Ariam Cafe, and this is largely due to the exceptional Cafe owner and staff. Their service was impeccable, and they ensured that all of our needs were met. The beverages were consistently delicious, and the food was always of the highest quality. The owner went above and beyond to make my experience truly memorable. Additionally, the restrooms were remarkably clean despite the Cafe being quite busy, which I greatly appreciate. I highly recommend visiting the Cafe and experiencing their outstanding hospitality. You will undoubtedly leave with a positive impression.

Delicious food and friendly service. I had quanta firfir - it was tasty and perfectly spicy. The portion was enough for two meals. I had food to go, but the cafe looked comfortable and welcoming. I'll definitely come back.

A wonderful place! Opened recently, serving Ethiopian ???????? and Eritrean ???????? dishes. There's pop music from those countries on the TV. The black coffee was great, and the fafa is very flavourful - good spice for the cold weather. The made the fafa vegan for me on request (I think usually it's prepared with dairy&eggs). The people running the restaurant are very kind, and I enjoyed staying here awhile and reading in the evening. Would definitely recommend a visit.
